China’s Diplomacy: A Double Response to Japan’s Remarks

In a period of four days last week, Beijing’s envoy to the United Nations addressed criticisms leveled at Japan. First, during a Security Council debate, China’s envoy stated that Tokyo was fundamentally unprepared to hold a permanent seat, characterizing Japan’s Prime Minister’s comments on Taiwan as “brazen” and “provocative.” Subsequently, on November 7th, Japan’s Prime Minister suggested deployment of its military forces to the region. China responded with a statement emphasizing the importance of international cooperation and reaffirming its own position on Taiwan’s status. The diplomatic exchanges highlight ongoing disagreements between the two nations.
