Hong Kong Authorities Investigate Electricity Theft for Bitcoin Mining

Two technicians have been detained following suspicion of stealing electricity from two Hong Kong care homes for disabled residents. The men allegedly installed eight mining devices within the suspended ceilings of their offices, utilizing the care homes’ electricity and internet networks. This theft resulted in significantly higher electricity bills for the victims, totaling approximately HK$9,000 (USD $1,153) above usual charges. Police investigation is ongoing to determine the extent of the scheme and potential charges.
