Hong Kong customs has initiated a three-month pilot program to utilize laser labeling on duty-paid tobacco products. The initiative aims to reduce the prevalence of untaxed cigarettes within the city. Commissioner Chan Tsz-tat indicated confidence in the effectiveness of the labels due to local tobacco companies’ capability to produce and affix them securely to each pack. The laser technology will facilitate a rapid and consistent labeling process, offering a potential deterrent to counterfeit products. The program’s success will be monitored closely to assess its impact on illicit cigarette sales.
