In a formal letter addressed to S. Jaishankar, the Member of Parliament (MP) has requested the release of detained Tamil fishermen. The fishermen were apprehended by the Sri Lankan Navy on September 28th, approximately at 2:40 a. Shortly after the detention, 10 of the 12 fishermen were identified as originating from the Karaikal region of the Union Territory, and two were linked to Tamil Nadu. The Sri Lankan authorities are reportedly investigating the circumstances surrounding the detention and are cooperating with the MP’s request for their release. The MP emphasized the importance of upholding human rights and ensuring the well-being of individuals detained in foreign countries.
