Putin Offers Voluntary Extension of New START Treaty

On Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a willingness to maintain the current limits on deployed strategic nuclear weapons under the New START treaty, which expires in February. In a private conversation, Putin proposed this arrangement in exchange for the US agreeing to maintain similar limits. The White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, stated that Putin’s offer was considered “pretty good” by the administration. However, the US President, Donald Trump, is expected to address the proposal independently. This agreement represents the last significant strategic arms control accord between the two nations, establishing a framework for limiting nuclear weapons deployment.
