Andhra Pradesh marked the foundation of a greenfield steel plant by ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel (AMNS) on March 23, a project valued at Rs. 1.36 lakh crore. The plant is expected to have an annual production capacity of 17.8 million tonnes of finished steel and could generate over 100,000 jobs, according to official statements.
The foundation ceremony was attended by Union Steel Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and ArcelorMittal Chairman Lakshmi Mittal, along with Aditya Mittal. Agreements related to skill development programs were also signed to support local employment.
The project has been part of ongoing political discussion in the state. YSR Congress Party leader Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has said that initial discussions with the company began during his tenure, including meetings with company representatives in 2022. However, according to the current state government, key steps such as land allocation and regulatory clearances were completed after the new administration took office.
Officials stated that project approvals, infrastructure links, and utilities were established within a 21-month period, enabling construction to begin. The development is part of broader efforts to expand industrial capacity and manufacturing activity in the state.
The steel plant is expected to contribute to regional economic activity and employment once operational.
