Actor Rick Hurst, best known for playing Deputy Cletus Hogg in the classic television series The Dukes of Hazzard, has died at the age of 79.

Hurst passed away on Thursday at his home in Los Angeles, his family confirmed. A cause of death was not disclosed. His son, actor Ryan Hurst (Sons of Anarchy), confirmed the news on social media, honoring his father with a simple message: “My pop, my hero.”

Born Richard Douglas Hurst in Houston, Texas, in 1946, the actor enjoyed a career in film, television, and theater that spanned over five decades. He gained national recognition in the early 1980s for his role as the bumbling yet endearing Deputy Cletus on The Dukes of Hazzard, appearing in over 40 episodes and later reprising the role in various spin-offs and reunion specials.

While Dukes gave him mainstream fame, Hurst’s filmography was extensive. He appeared in shows like Sanford and Son, The Partridge Family, MASH*, The Doris Day Show, and Family Ties. His film roles included parts in Steel Magnolias, The Cat from Outer Space, and In the Line of Fire.

Colleagues remembered Hurst as a warm and generous actor, known for bringing both humor and depth to his roles. “He was always the funniest guy in the room, but also the kindest,” a former co-star said in a tribute posted online.

In later years, Hurst remained connected with fans through appearances at fan conventions, often donning the deputy uniform that made him beloved to generations of viewers. He is survived by his wife, Shelly, and his son, Ryan.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
