Learners Lead Community Clean-Up Drive in Bengaluru

Bengaluru – A group of learners participated in a neighbourhood clean-up drive in central Bengaluru as part of the finale of Kartavyam 2025–26, a civic engagement programme conducted by Beyond 8 in collaboration with The Ugly Indian.

The on-ground event was held at Kamaraj Road in Sivanchetti Gardens and brought together around 20 learners and facilitators. The activity focused on improving the immediate neighbourhood through hands-on civic action and marked the conclusion of Kartavyam, a learner-led initiative designed to build awareness around social responsibility, environmental care and collective participation.

According to the organisers, Kartavyam includes a series of preparatory sessions conducted over several weeks, during which learners examine civic and environmental challenges and explore ways to address them at the local level. As part of the programme, participants also attended a session with Malini Parmar, founder of Stonesoup.in, where discussions focused on waste segregation and community-driven sustainability practices.

The choice of location for the finale was intended to allow learners to apply classroom learning to a real-world setting, reinforcing the programme’s emphasis on neighbourhood ownership and local action.

Ratna Sudha, a facilitator at Beyond 8, said the clean-up drive was aimed at fostering civic responsibility among learners and encouraging them to take active roles in their communities. Representatives from The Ugly Indian highlighted the importance of citizen participation in maintaining public spaces and noted the role of collaboration in sustaining civic initiatives.

Organisers said the Kartavyam programme reflects Beyond 8’s focus on experiential learning approaches that extend beyond formal classroom settings and encourage learners to engage directly with their surroundings.
