Honeywell, IIT Bombay Launch Sustainability Skills Centre

Honeywell and the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) announced an agreement to establish a Centre of Excellence at the institute’s Powai campus aimed at developing sustainability-related skills among students.

The IIT Bombay–Honeywell Centre of Excellence for Future Skills & Innovation will be funded by Honeywell Hometown Solutions India Foundation, the company’s philanthropic arm in India. According to the announcement, the centre will provide laboratory infrastructure, equipment, curriculum development, and research and innovation grants.

The initiative aims to train more than 100,000 students by 2030 through certificate-based programs that combine coursework and practical projects focused on sustainability challenges. Undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral students from across India will be eligible to participate.

During a pilot phase over the next two months, the centre plans to set up its infrastructure, develop a specialized curriculum, and train an initial group of 250 students. Following the pilot phase, the program is expected to engage about 20,000 students annually through structured courses.

The curriculum will include five learning tracks: sustainability reporting, sustainable finance, energy security, sustainability infrastructure, and policy advocacy. Each participant will complete 40 hours of training across these areas. Instruction and applied research will be delivered by IIT Bombay faculty and industry specialists, with Honeywell employees contributing mentorship and technical guidance.

Honeywell President for India and Asia Pacific Ashish Modi said workforce development is key to building a sustainable economy, while IIT Bombay Director Shireesh B. Kedare said the centre aims to connect academic learning with real-world sustainability challenges.

The partnership forms part of Honeywell India’s “Saksham” skilling initiative, which provides training in fields including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and sustainability.
