Maharashtra Launches MahaAgX Agriculture Data Platform

Mumbai : The Government of Maharashtra on Tuesday launched MahaAgX, a state-level agriculture data exchange platform, at the AI4Agri 2026 event.

Developed by the Centre of Data for Public Good (CDPG) at the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, in partnership with the state’s Department of Agriculture and the World Bank, MahaAgX is designed as a public digital infrastructure to support artificial intelligence applications in agriculture. With the launch, Maharashtra becomes the second state in India to establish a dedicated agriculture-focused data exchange.

Built on a federated, standards-based architecture, the platform enables secure, consent-driven data sharing and integration of datasets from multiple sources. According to officials, it is intended to allow government departments to share data while retaining control and ensuring privacy protections.

Dr. Inder Gopal, Chairman of CDPG and Research Professor at IISc, said scalable AI in agriculture depends on access to trusted and interoperable data systems. He described MahaAgX as a public digital backbone aimed at enabling secure data exchange and supporting innovation among startups, researchers, and government agencies.

At the event, CDPG hosted a session on agriculture data infrastructure and demonstrated the platform’s architecture and integration models. Discussions focused on public digital infrastructure, consent-based data ecosystems, institutional frameworks for state-level exchanges, and regulatory oversight for AI-driven agriculture initiatives.
