Amaravathi : Manipal Hospital in Vijayawada has completed its first heart transplantation, hospital officials announced at a press meet on Saturday.
The patient, 21-year-old K. Sathyavathi from Vizianagaram, had been living with dilated cardiomyopathy for several years. As her condition progressed to severe heart failure despite medical therapy, she underwent a comprehensive transplant evaluation, including right heart catheterization. She was subsequently listed for organ transplantation under the state-run Jeevandan organ-sharing program, through which a suitable donor heart became available.
The transplant was performed by a multidisciplinary team including specialists from cardiothoracic and vascular surgery, cardiac anaesthesiology, nephrology, and cardiology. Financial assistance for the procedure was provided through the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF) and support from the Manipal Foundation, according to hospital officials. The patient is currently stable and under post-operative monitoring.
Dr. Dilip Ratti, Consultant in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, said heart transplantation requires advanced life-support infrastructure such as extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and ventricular assist devices, along with coordinated teamwork across specialties.
Sathyavathi said the financial assistance helped ease the burden on her family and made the surgery possible.
K. Rambabu, AP Jeevandan State Coordinator, said many patients in Andhra Pradesh are awaiting organ transplants and emphasized the role of donor participation and state coordination.
J. Ramanjaneya Reddy, Hospital Director of Manipal Hospital Vijayawada, said the procedure marks an expansion of advanced cardiac care services at the facility.
