Mumbai : Prime Video has released the latest edition of the O Womaniya! report, a study examining female representation in Indian entertainment. Researched by Ormax Media and produced by Film Companion Studios, the 2025 edition analyzed 122 films and series released in 2024 across nine Indian languages, spanning streaming and theatrical platforms.
According to the findings, 32% of the titles assessed passed the O Womaniya! Toolkit test, which evaluates whether female characters have agency and drive their own narratives. Streaming films showed improvement, with 47% meeting the criteria, marking a 16-percentage-point increase from the previous report. Telugu content recorded a 21-percentage-point rise, with 31% of titles passing the test. While more women-commissioned projects met the benchmark, the report noted an increase in titles commissioned by men that also qualified.
Female representation in key behind-the-camera roles declined, with women holding 13% of head-of-department positions in direction, cinematography, editing, writing and production design, down from 15% last year. Female directors were credited in 8% of analyzed titles. In marketing, women accounted for 29% of trailer talk time, up slightly from 27% in 2022.
Corporate leadership showed improvement, with women occupying 18% of 110 Director/CXO roles across 25 media and entertainment firms, up from 12% in the previous report.
Industry figures including Stuti Ramachandra of Prime Video, Ormax Media’s Shailesh Kapoor, and film critic Anupama Chopra emphasized the need for continued efforts toward gender equity. Chopra also moderated a roundtable discussion featuring actors, filmmakers and executives to discuss the findings and industry challenges.
