New Delhi: US Ambassador-designate Sergio Gor met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday to discuss the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and broader bilateral issues, according to official statements.
Prime Minister Modi expressed confidence that the relationship between the two nations would continue to strengthen under Gor’s leadership. In an official post on X, Modi acknowledged the meeting, which Gor later reposted along with a message praising the Prime Minister.
Gor, nominated in August and recently confirmed by the US Senate, is in New Delhi for a six-day visit accompanied by Deputy Secretary for Management and Resources Michael J. Rigas, according to the US Government.
The discussions between Modi, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and the visiting delegation covered the current state of India-US relations, trade issues, and global policy concerns. Jaishankar highlighted the importance of the dialogue amid ongoing trade tensions, including US tariffs of up to 50% on Indian goods and a 25% levy on crude oil imported from Russia — measures India has described as “unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable.”
Gor, a former advisor and personnel director in the White House, represents one of the latest key appointments in the US diplomatic corps. The Senate confirmed 107 of 110 nominees, with Gor’s confirmation marking a significant step in advancing US representation in India.
